THE SOUTHERN CAMPAIGN

  • It was a vigorous effort by the British to squash the rebellion in the Carolinas and Georgia after setbacks in the North.
  • Most battles happened in the Lowcountry because there was a large amount of loyalists there.
  • The British thought that the loyalists would help them in the battle.
  • There were 130+ battles in the Southern Campaign. The turning point of the Southern Campaign was the Battle of Cowpens.

Southern Campaign Battles

  • The Battle of Charleston was a victory for the Patriots at first, but the second time around the British cut off supply lines.
  • Buford's Massacre was a horrible defeat for the Patriots, as Buford's troops were killed by Tarleton's troops after they were already defeated when they were to late to aid the battle of Charleston.
  • With the encounter resulting in nearly 2,000 Patriots killed or taken prisoner and heavy losses of artillery, Gates was removed from command and replaced by Nathanael Greene after the battle of Camden.
  • The British captured Savannah, Georgia after a surprise attack on American forces in Savannah.
