Jaycee Dugard

  • Taken at age 12
  • Held captive for 18 years
  • Has two children from rape
  • Has her own foundation
  • She is very strong and confident
Jaycee was taken on her way to school one morning. She was held captive for 18 years. She was scared of everything and when she was out in the real world finally with her family she felt she was still living by her captives rules. She is beginning to learn that she does not have to follow any ones rules anymore.

The book

  • Describes many cruel stories
  • Shows how hard it was coping
  • Kept my attention throughout the book
Jacyee describes many of her experiences and stories that she went through. Many of them are very depressing and make me realize how many things i take for granted.

Learning to cope

Throughout Jaycee's experience she said she had tried to forget her life before she was taken. Sometimes it made things a little bit easier to deal with. Other days however she couldn't help but wonder how her family was, if they missed her or even how their Christmas was. When she was found she had to take her first steps into the adult life and take care of her family. Even though she was no longer a prisoner she still felt like she had to hide from photographers.

The organization
The book was written in chronological order. At the end of every chapter Jaycee would reflect upon what she mentioned previously.

The chapters in the book were written in chronological order and from her view while she was going through everything that was happening to her. At the end of every chapter she would reflect upon what she wrote with her views on the situations as an adult.

Tone
The tone of the book varies a lot throughout it.

In the beginning of the book the tone is very sad, gloomy and dark. Although, throughout the book the tone seems to lighten. When Jaycee has her first kid she has a mix of emotions. By the end of the book after she is found she is very positive and looks forward to a great future with her family.

The vocabulary and language of the book

The vocabulary and language of the book were not that complex. There was maybe 5-10 words in the memoir that i didn't know tops.

Features
Inside the book there is actual journal entries copied into the book in Jaycee's own handwriting talking about pets she had or what she went through

The journal entries in the book are all about animals she had or different things she experienced. Her kidnapper would not let her write down her real name so she had to tear her name out of the journal.

Extra
The pinecone on the title page represents the last thing Jaycee touched before she was taken. It now represents a new beginning to her.
