At face value, "A Wild Sheep Chase" is a pointless, directionless novel yet it is this aspect which heightens its significance.

A Wild Goose Chase:

a foolish/hopeless pursuit of something unnattainable

"....this sheep did not exist in Japan.Nor probably anywhere else in the world...a sheep that by all rights should not exist."

Namelessness

"Why do boats have names, but not airplanes?"

"I think I just don't like names. Basically, I can't see what's wrong with calling me 'me' or you
'you'..."

Mediocracy

"Now people can generally be classified into two groups: the mediocre realists and the mediocre dreamers."

"No matter how boring or mediocre it might be, this was my world."

" The unexamined life is not worth living."
