ABOUT

  • Donatello was a sculptor of the renaissance
  • He liked humanism and nature
  • His early work was in the gothic style
  • Later on, he began to develop a style of his own
  • He was also very close with the Medici family

  • Donatello is from Florence, Italy
  • Florence, Italy is said to be the heart of the rennisance
  • Florence had many artists in the city
  • Florence was the center of European wool trade
  • The Medici family controlled Florence for most of the Rennisance

MOST FAMOSE WORK

  • Between 1411 and 1413 he sculpted St. Mark, this was placed in the exterior of Orsanmichele Church
  • In 1430 an art patron commissioned him to sculpt a second statue of David but this time in bronze
  • At a young age, he helped Lorenzo Ghiberti make the bronze doors for the baptistery of the Florence cathedral
  • In 1450, Donatello completed a bronze statue called Gattamelata, shown as the background
