  • Abolitionists were people who opposed slavery and did the best to end it. They worked on the Underground Railroad to help slaves escape to the North

  • The boll weevil is a beetle that gets inside of crops. It destroyed over half of South Carolina's cotton crop.

CASH CROP

  • A cash crop is a crop that is sold for money instead of being used. Examples of cash crops are Rice, Indigo, Tobacco, and Cotton.

DENMARK VESSEY

  • Denmark Vessey is known for planning a massive slave rebellion. Unfortunately, he was caught before it could happen, which led to more strict laws.

EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION

  • The Emancipation Proclamation was a document signed by Abraham Lincoln. This document ended slavery in the south.

FREEDMEN'S BUREAU

  • The freedmen's bureau was an organization that helped slaves get settled after slavery ended. They fed the poor, built schools for blacks, and gave medical care.

GULLAH

  • Gullah is a language that is composed of African and English dialects. Many slaves from Africa used this language.

HUNLEY

  • The Hunley was the first submarine to sink a ship. It was used by the confederation to try and destroy the blockade.

INDIGO

  • Indigo is a type of cash crop. It was valuable because it could be turned into a dye for cloth.

JIM CROW LAWS

  • Jim Crow Laws were laws put in place to restrict the rights of African Americans. They were mostly effective after slavery ended.

KKK

  • The KKK were a group of people who were racist against African Americans. They tortured and lynched blacks after slavery ended.

LABOR UNIONS

  • Labor Unions were groups of people who tried to get employers to improve working hours, conditions, and wages. If the employer doesn't agree, then they go on strike.

MERCANTILISM

  • Mercantilism is the theory that colonies exist to bring profit to the mother country. Colonies need to make more money than they spend.

NAVAL STORES

  • Naval stores were used to waterproof buildings and ships. The things they used were pitch and tar.

ORDINANCE OF SECCESION

  • The ordinance of secession is what told the union that South Carolina was seceding from the union. They were the first state to do this.

PICKET

  • A picket is a type of protest in which a group of people march with signs held up above them. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Had these kinds of protests.

QUITRENT

  • A quitrent is an annual fee paid for farming on someone else's land. People paid these after the war.

RECONSTRUCTION

  • Reconstruction was the period after the civil war when the south had to rebuild. This period lasted for awhile after the war was over.

SIT-IN

  • A sit-in is a peaceful protest in which people go into a public segregated place and just simply sit down. The friendship nine did their historic sit in here in Rock Hill.

THREE-FIFTHS COMPROMISE

  • This was a compromise made by the government that counted every five slaves as three free people. This was good for the south because their were lots of slaves.

UNIONISTS

  • Unionists were people who wanted stay with the union. The other group were the secessionists, who wanted to secede as soon as possible.

  • A vigilante is a group of people who undertake the law without legal authority. People did this during the regulator movement because the law was unjust in the lowcountry.

  • A war bond is a loan made to the government to pay for a war. The government needed war bond ps during the World Wars.

  • The XYZ Affair was a diplomatic incident between French and United States diplomats that resulted in a limited, undeclared war known as the Quasi-War. U.S. and French negotiators restored peace with the Convention of 1800, also known as the Treaty of .

YAMASSEE WAR

  • The Yamassee War was when the Indians attacked colonists because they were taking their land. The colonists attacked beach and destroyed everything.

  • The Zimmerman Telegram was a message being sent to Mexico from Germany. However, it was intercepted by the US, which led to us entering WW2.
