History should be a core subject because it gives us perspective. There were times when things were different. We need to know how it used to be to grasp that the world has been here longer than we can imagine. It reminds us to be grateful and to not repeat our mistakes. To understand the present, we must understand the past.

A-Articles of Confederation

They were the first written plan of government for the United States. They were not efficient.

B-bill of rights

They were a listing of the basic rights of u.s. Citizens. Anti-federalists fought for this

C-common sense

Common sense was a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine. It persuaded many to support independence.

D-dred Scott decision

The dred Scott decision was a Supreme Court decision in 1857. It claimed that African Americans couldn't ever be citizens of America.

E-Eli Whitney

He was an American inventor during the industrial revolution. He came up with the cotton gin and interchangeable parts.

F-fourteenth amendment

The fourteenth amendment was an addition to the constitution and was ratified in 1868. It declared anyone born in the u.s. A citizen.

G-William Lloyd garrison

He published a newspaper called the liberator. It called for full equality towards African Americans.

H-Harriet Tubman

She was a conductor of the Underground Railroad. Hundreds of slaves gained their freedom because of her.

I-impressment

It was the abducting of u.s. Sailors. They were forced to serve in the British navy.

J-July 4th

This was the day the Declaration of Independence was signed. It was written by Thomas Jefferson.

K-Ku klux klan

The kkk were a group against African Americans. They threatened, beat, and murdered them.

L-Lucretia Mott

Mott was a women's sufferage activist. She signed the Seneca falls declaration of sentiments.

M-boston massacre

The boston massacre was a riot during the American revolution period. It led to the death of 5 colonists.

N-North Star

It was an abolitionist newspaper. Fredrick Douglass runs it.

O-James Oglethorpe

He was one of the original founders of Georgia. Georgia was founded so debtors could escape prosecution.

P-Barbary pirates

They captured merchant ships and sailors and held them for ransom. The ruler of tripoli later demanded a larger tribute and threatened to declare war.

Q-quartering act

The quartering act was a law enforced during the revolutionary period. It stated that colonists had to provide soldiers free housing during times of war.

R-reconstruction

It was a period of rebuilding the south after the civil war. African Americans were met with lots of prejudice.

S-stamp act

It was a tax on all printed goods in the colonies. This (along with other laws) ultimately led to the phrase ''no taxation without representation''.

T-trail of tears

The trail of tears was the journey the Cherokee nation was forced to make after being forced off of their land. This was part of Jackson's indian removal act.

U-Ulysses s. Grant

Grant was the general of the union during the civil war. He went on to be the 18th president of the United States.

V-valley forge

This was where the continental army trained during the revolutionary war. It was known as the ''winter of red snow''.

W-whiskey rebellion

The whiskey rebellion was when farmers rebelled against the recent law against whiskey. This exchange challenged the stability of the articles of confederation.

The xyz affair was when John Adams sent 3 diplomats to negotiate with the French. They were accommodated by 3 secret agents who requested bribe.

Y-Yorktown

This is where the final battle of the American revolution took place. Lord Cornwallis surrendered, mainly because of the presence of the French navy.

Z-trial of John Peter zenger

Zenger was brought into court for publishing articles criticizing the government.this case was a step towards freedom of the press.
