Crafts

  • Abenaki made a lot or beadwork, and quillwork was popular as well.
  • They made accessorie such as belts, purses, and moccasins.

Housing

  • Abenaki houses were made of birchbark, which they called wigwams or lodges
  • They were made the size of an average family tent, so the whole family could live in the same houses

Transportation

  • Traveling be canoe was popular in the summer but in the winter it was different
  • In the winter, they traveled by sled, or they would travel by waking with home made snow shoes

Location/Population

  • Because the English settlement came, the Abenaki tribes had to flee to different locations going west. They had a variety of locations from Maine to Massachusetts
  • Their population dropped severely to about half it's original, for the English settlers brought with them many different dseases.

Hunting

  • Abenaki would fish with spears, and they did this for ice fishing too
  • They made castors that were very foul smelling. Because they were smelt so bad, it attracted animals for them to hunt
