Our Thoughts can control our happiness.

Our thoughts can control our happiness. This is why we be aware of... (next slide). Words to say when the going gets rough. And these are ways we can help ourselves and prevent our selves from suffering great amounts of stress.

Words To Say When

The Going Gets Rough

1. Do Not Blame Yourself.

Learn the difference between what you can and cannot control.
Illness is not your fault. Behavior problems are not your fault. They are the results of a crisis, a trauma, or other worldly events.

2. You can help others - but you cannot get well for them.

You cannot force people to try new treatments. We also cannot spare one another pain.

3. Develop An Attitude of Gratitude.

Einstein presented the idea that everything is relative to the observer. Observe positively.

4. Do Not become a martyr.

In order to help others, you need supplies to first help yourself.

5. Broaden Your Perspectives

Look back, look forward, look up. Know you are not alone!

6. Have A Spiritual Context.

Having a belief with a "plan" brings relief to some stress.

Humor for Healing

"Seven days without laughter makes one weak." - Joel Goodman

Humor Brings Joy To Life

  • Humor is capable of healing depression and even anger after tragic events.
  • However, it is meant to be used during emotional, not physical healing.

Humor Helps!

  • Jason Goodson conducted a survey on depressed people.
  • Clinically depressed individuals watched tapes of stand-up comedy for 30minutes a day for 4 weeks.
  • End result: 42% Reduction in depression scores of participants.

Humor Creates Bonds

  • Laughter is capable of healing relationships fractured by resentment.
  • Laughter can create new perspectives and distinguish important events from non-important events.

Using Humor Properly

  • Avoid sarcasm
  • Avoid abusive humor (laughing at the expense of others)
  • Humor should be kind
  • Humor should be unexpected
  • Too much humor can lead to an individual feeling as if their situation is not being taken seriously.
