Abraham Stories Comparison

By: Faith Freeman

Christianity

The Abraham story comes from the bible and it is located in Genesis 22: 1-19

Islam

The Abraham Story in Islam comes from the Qur’an 37:96-113

Christianity Story Includes

  • Abraham and Isaac, God refers to him as Abraham's only son.
  • Abraham takes Isaac to the place God told him to go, but Abraham doesn't tell him he has to sacrifice him.
  • Abraham starts to prepare the sacrifice, but an Angel of the Lord appears and stops him, and then gives him a ram to sacrifice instead

Islam's Story Includes

  • Allah tells Abraham, he wants him to sacrifice him( doesn't specify "who" quite yet) by making a furnace to throw him in to it.
  • Abraham, say's he will do it and will go where ever the Lord guides him.
  • He tells his son that Allah wants him to sacrifice him and ask him what he thinks.
  • His son says to do what ever Allah says and they begin the sacrifice, but Allah stops him.

Purpose of these Text

  • I feel like the purpose of these text was to inform because, there was nothing about persuasion or entertaining.
  • Christianity's text spoke more in third person.
  • Islam's text spoke more in first, second and third person

Literary Structure and Style of the Text

  • Both were written in more of a narrative descriptive style, because the purpose was to inform.
  • The Bible story used some imagery when it was describing what Abraham was doing to prepare Isaac for the sacrifice.

Literary Structure and Style of the Text

  • The Qur'an story used some foreshadowing when Abraham asked his son what he thought about the sacrifice and it turned out to be different from what we would expect.
  • The format of both stories was in chronological order. Both started from God and Allah telling Abraham to sacrifice his son(Isaac and Ishmael), and later leading to the almost sacrifices.
