PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Acids, Bases, and Neutrals

Acids

  • pH lower than 7
  • Sour taste
  • Conducts electricity
  • React with bases to neutralize its properties.
  • Acids create hydrogen ions when dissolved in water
  • Acids are proton donors

Bases

  • pH higher than 7
  • Bitter taste
  • Conducts electricity
  • Reacts with acids to neutralize its properties.
  • Bases separate into hydroxide ions when dissolved in water
  • Bases are proton acceptors

Neutral

  • Has a pH equal to 7.
  • Does not have all of the properties of Acids and Bases.
  • A neutral has an equal amount of hydrogen and hydroxide ions.

Base, Acid, or Neutral?

  • Get litmus paper, red or blue
  • Add a drop of solution to paper.
  • If it turns red it's an acid (Red litmus paper will stay the same)
  • If it turns blue it's a base (Blue litmus paper will stay the same)
  • If it doesn't stays the same on both red and blue litmus paper it's neutral

pH scale

  • Acids have a smaller number on the pH scale
  • Bases have a higher number on the pH scale
  • Neutral have an exact pH of 7
  • Hydroxide ions make the pH go up
  • Hydronium ions make the pH go down.
