Why are punishments for young people ineffective?

Untitled Slide

Punishment can be an effective way to be able to control a young persons behavior. But this can also effect the person being punished differently from what the punisher desires. An example of an undesired outcome could be that the punished would fail to stop. Attention could be all they are after and they would take any attention over none. "Attention is one of the most potent rewards available for a young person" (JD 1). Another outcome could be aggression shown by the punished towards the offender and would end up leading to nowhere. Punishment can also be abusive if taken far enough, and that would lead to the offender gaining feelings of mistrust and resentment. Overall, fine lines can be easily stepped over when it comes to punishment, so you should not stick with it.

Untitled Slide

Of course, there are some cases when punishment is indeed needed. Like when it comes to offenders of serious crimes like murder and rape. These offenses should not be taken lightly with small little tactics to prevent them from doing it again. The best course of action in those senses would be to lock them up and throw away the key. Maybe in some circumstances, some people may be redeemed, such as those who are mentally insane. They require help from trained professionals who know how to help them. In the end, all you can really do is try your best to take the right course of action and hope for the best.
