ACTUAL CASES OF CHILDREN KILLING CHILDREN

In both the Lord of the Flies and the real world there are gruesome cases in which children kill children. But why? What was their motive? What caused them to be able to take another child's life?

THE JAMES BULGER CASE

John Venables and Robert Thomson had cut school and had been steaking in the shopping center when they decided to "get a kid" they ended up leading 2 year old James Bulger away by the hand. They walked with him for 2.5 miles, kicking, hitting, and once even dropping him on his head. However, somewhere between 5:45-6:30, the killing began. They splashed paint on him, beat him with an iron bar, Robert took off his pants and "played" with his genitals. They threw bricks at him, and finally, thinking him dead, left him buried by bricks on the middle of the rail road, still alive.

The Brian Howe and Martin Brown case

Mary Bell was the daughter of a prostitute and was sold to her mother's "clients" by the age of 4. 7 years later she brutally murdered Martin Brown and Brian Howe when she was only 11 years old. She killed four year old Martin and 3 year old Brian by strangulation. With Martin, she made it look like he overdosed, but with Brian it was evident from the shaved hair and genitals and a carved letter "m" on his stomach. She did not feel remorse at the time and rather enjoyed the chase. However, after 23 years in prison she eventually earned anonymity for her and her daughter.

The Derrick Robie Case

Eric Smith was constantly bullied as a kid for his appearances, having red hair, big glasses and long ears. Also, after he was arrested, he was discovered to have a mental disorder in which he could not hold back inner rage. At age 13, he lured Derrick Robie into a forest, then strangled, dropped large rocks on and sodomized the4 year old with a stick on his way to a summer camp. He is still in prison.

Why did they do it? What was the final straw? How could they lose themselves to take out there anger on someone innocent? The reason: they embraced the darkness within, their "beast", and gave in to their desires to kill.

The signs or similarities between the killers:
- Fear at home
- Bad relations with parents
- Feeling helpless, victimized
- Focused anger
- No conscience, didn't feel any empathy for another's life
- Abuse towards animals
- Easily frustrated
- Enjoyed killing, thought it was a game

CONNECTION TO The LORD OF THE FLIES

• Simon was brutally murdered by the other children when they thought he was the beast
• Piggy was killed when a kid lobbed a rock at him to end his life.
• Ralph was being hunted down to be killed by the other children.
• In both reality and the story the children embraced the darkness within.
• Children kill children
