PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Matter

  • Anything that takes up space and has mass. All matter is made up of atoms

atom

  • The smallest unit of a chemical element.
  • Each atom consists of a nucleus, which has a positive charge, and a set of electrons that move around the nucleus.

element

  • Each element is made of only one kind of atom. There are about 120 elements Examples
  • hydrogen (H2) oxygen (O2) carbon (C) nitrogen (N2) iron (Fe) aluminum (Al) gold (Au) calcium (Ca)

PERIODIC TABLE

  • a list of all of the chemical elements that exist in the universe (that have been discovered by humans so far) Categorizes, organizes elements according to the properties of their atoms

MOLECULE

  • Formed when 2 or more atoms join together. These may be 2 of the same atom or 2 different atoms.
  • Examples of Molecules: water (H2O) salt (NaCl) oxygen (O2) sugar (C6H12O6) carbon dioxide (CO2)

COMPOUND

  • Formed when 2 or more DIFFERENT atoms are joined together. Note: All compounds are also molecules, but not all molecules are compounds. Examples of Compounds: CO2 NaCl H2O2 Non Examples - Not compounds: O2 H2 Why aren’t these compounds?

SUBSCRIPTS

  • tell you how many “atoms” of each element for that molecule Example: H2 = 2 atoms hydrogen Examples: H2O = 2 atoms hydrogen, 1 atom oxygen

PHOTOSYNTHESIS

  • is the process by which plants make their own food.
  • 6H2O + 6CO2 → C6H12O6 + 6O2
  • To make food plants need: carbon dioxide water sunlight
  • Provides: Food (for the plant) Oxygen (for respiration)

CELLULAR RESPIRATION

  • The process by which the cells of ALL LIVING THINGS break apart glucose to release energy
  • C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6H2O + 6CO2 +Energy
