Opium

  • Opium is a sticky sap that comes out of the poppy plants that are ripe and ready for harvest
  • This sticky sap has been around for more than 6000 years and has been cultivated to induce happiness
  • Because of this effect its first intentional use was for successful pain killing
  • But instead is abused and turned into Morphine and Heroin

Its Impact and Abuse

  • Farmers in Afghanistan are accountable for about 9 tenths of the worlds opium reserve and production
  • Because this drug is dangerously addictive and a stump to Afghanistan's political progress, many attempts have been made to try and eradicate it

The "Five Pillar Plan"

  • Its the U.S.'s attempt at destroying Opium
  • To do that the DEA turned its presence in Afghanistan to full focus
  • This allowed them to destroy Opium labs and arrest drug traffickers in order to bring down the production of it
  • When the Taliban took over they banned the cultivation of this drug but when they were over thrown it sparked production greater than ever before
