ATLAS MOUNTAINS

  • Runs through Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia
  • Stretches about 2500 kilometers
  • Highest peak is Toubkal, in Morocco
  • Highest point is over 13,000 feet high
  • Are home to many castles

SAHARA

  • Largest hot desert in the world
  • Located in Northern Africa
  • Worlds hottest desert
  • It has almost as big of an area as the United States
  • Is 9,400,000 square kilometers

NILE RIVER

  • Worlds longest river
  • Has two rivers, the white Nile and blue Nile that converge
  • Therefore, the Nile has two sources, one in lake Victoria and one in Ethiopia
  • The Nile is dammed by the Aswan High Dam near the city of Aswan, Egypt
  • Lake Nasser is created by the Aswan High Dam

CONGO RIVER

  • Empties the Congo rain forest
  • Worlds deepest river
  • 2900 miles long
  • Used to be called the Zaire river
  • Africa's second longest river

NAMIB DESERT

  • Merges with the Kalahari in the South
  • Extends for 1200 miles
  • Reaches inland 100 miles from the shore
  • Located in mostly Angola
  • Name means a place where there is nothing

HORN OF AFRICA

  • Mostly the country of Somalia
  • Has an arid, desert like climate
  • A training ground for terrorists
  • Also called the Somalian peninsula
  • Many pirates are known for coming from this region

  • Tallest mountain in Africa
  • Extinct volcano
  • 19,341 feet tall
  • Located in Tanzania

ETHIOPIAN PLATEAU

  • Source of the blue Nile
  • Also called Ethiopian highlands
  • Located mostly on the Horn of Africa and further inland
  • Covers much of Ethiopia
