BERLIN CONFERENCE

  • The Berlin Conference was convened in 1884-1885.
  • This conference didn't allow African rulers despite the fact that it was their land.
  • Africa was divided without regard to ethnic groups and cultures by European nations.
  • By 1914, on,y Liberia and Ethiopia remained free of European control.

EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM

  • Africa was too difficult to take over because of diseases and the people there.
  • Superior technology, steamboats, and medicine helped the Europeans colonize Africa.
  • Imperialism started in the 1600s.
  • Africa was too difficult to take over because of diseases and the people there.

IMPERIALISTIC METHODS

  • Europeans worked through indirect rule.
  • When the colonies were established, tribes were grouped together no matter the culture that was behind them.
  • Europeans kept control over their colonies because of technology threat and indirect rule.
  • Infrastructure was the main thing Europeans did when they colonized Africa, but prevented them from a good education.

END OF COLONIALISM

  • Most African countries gained their independce from European control due to WWII.
  • Civil wars broke out in almost every African nation and are still going on today.
  • Every country had to figure out whether they were a republic or democratic government right then and there.
  • Coup is a military overthrow of the government, which happened to European control.

LASTING EFFECTS

  • Despite its history, some African countries have made progress and become more successful.
  • Civil wars are still happening.
  • Political issues and decisions are difficult to overcome due to the language differences.
  • There are multiple governments because of the culture and ethnic differences.
