AFRICAN SWINE FEVER VIRUS
- also known as ASFV
- can be found in all tissues and body fluids
- mainly in the blood
- pigs may become carriers
- in sub-Saharan Africa
- can only affect pigs
- highly contagious
Symptoms:
- depression
- loss of appetite
- weight loss
- extremities turn blueish-purple
- hemorrhages become apparent on ears and abdomen
- shivering
- abnormal breathing
More symptoms:
- coughing
- skin ulcers
- swollen joints
- bloody diarrhea
- high fever
- anorexia
- lethargy
-weakness
- recumbency
Even more symptoms:
- cyanotic skin botching
- nasal discharges
- vomiting
- abortions (if the female was pregnant)
- reddening of ears
- swelling of kidneys
Transmission:
- through direct and indirect contact
- oranasal spread
- tick vectors
- fomites
