AFRICA'S COLONIZATION HISTORY

BERLIN CONFERENCE

  • Regulated European colonization in Africa
  • Was formed mainly because of Belgium's colony of Congo.
  • It happened in 1884 and 1885
  • Also known as the West Africa Conference

EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM

  • Happened in the beginning of the 20th century when European countries wanted more raw matterial.
  • Used force against native peoples
  • Had strict laws to keep revolutionary thoughts out of mind
  • Made natives people work in mines and other places as slaves.

IMPERIALISTIC METHODS

  • Used native peoples as slaves
  • Took Africa's raw material to better their countries economy
  • Made their countries better while stealing wealth from their colonies
  • Made extreme changes to daily life

END OF COLONIZATION

  • Revolutions sprang up
  • Materials used up and they didn't need the colony anymore
  • New people came into power
  • Peaceful protest of their ruling nation

LASTING EFFECTS

  • Left countries in ruins after using almost all mineral wealth
  • Not good education
  • Poor families and failing economies
  • Not enough money for medical aid.
