What is the problem to be solved?

It allows DNA fragments to be extracted with relative ease

How Does the technique Works?

  • Agarose gel is mixed with a electrophoresis buffer
  • Samples containing DNA are piped into sample wells
  • An electric current is ran through the samples
  • The DNA will migrate to the positive electrode
  • The gel seperates based on size and charge

WHY DOES DNA MOVE TOWARD THE POSITIVE END?

DNA is negatively charged and opposites attract.

How is the technique applied in the world

  • Crime scene investigation
  • Visualize DNA fragments
  • Purify a PCR product
