THE AGE OF EXPLORATION

LEIF ERIKSSON

  • Leif Eriksson was the son of Erik the Red, and shared his father's love for adventure.
  • Eriksson had settled in a coastal area he had called Vinland, but the Vikings had left a few years after.
  • He was sailing from west Norway to Greenland when strong winds had blew his ship off course and carried his ship to the Notrth America coast.
  • Eriksson and his crew landed on the Labrador Peninsula in pre-sent day Canda.

FERDINAND MAGELLAN

  • He had sailed from the southern tip of South America into the Pacific Ocean
  • Ferdinand Magellan was killed in the Philippine Islands.
  • One of his ships from the expedition was the first to circumnavigate.

COLUMBIAN EXCHANGE

  • It had started with the explorations of Christopher Columbus .
  • This had transported different thing from both the old world to the new world
  • The old world brought carrots,rice , and diseases the Native Americans were not immune to.
  • The new world brought avocados,corn,strawberries, and peppers to the old world.

CONQUISTAORS

  • Conquistaor were Spanish soldiers who led military expositions in America.
  • A conquistador was Francisco Pizarro who led his troops to capture the great Inca Empire.
  • The conquistadors had superior weapons and formed alliances with enemies of the Aztec.
  • The conquistadors had conquered the Inca and Aztec Empires.

THE NORTH WEST PASSAGE

  • Europeans wanted to find a passage in the new world to allow ships to sail from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
  • Early searchers for the Northwest Passage explored the the coast from Canada to North Carolina.
  • The Northwest passage was never found, but the voyages led to more interest in North America.

THE MIDDLE PASSAGE

  • Enslaved people were chained and packed as cargo in lower decks of slave ships.
  • In the crowded ships, many of the slaves died of illness, suffocation, or malnutrition.
  • Between the 1520's and the 1860's about 12 million Africans were ship to America as slaves.

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS

  • He was a sailor from Genoa, Itlay.
  • He thought he could sail from Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean.
  • When Columbus had died he still thought he had reached Asia.
