HISTORY

  • First appeared in 1981 in the US
  • There are 2 types HIV-1 and HIV-2
  • Gorillas and chimps have HIV-1
  • Sooty mangabeys have HIV-2

SPREAD

  • Spread mainly through the practice of bushmeat
  • Spreads through unprotected sexual intercourse
  • This includes anal and oral
  • Blood transfusion
  • Mother-to-child through breastfeeding

ORPHANS

  • Their parent or parents have died
  • One parent contracts AIDS and transfers it to the other parent
  • Both parents die shortly without proper treatment
  • Wars leave thousands of orphans

ECONOMIC IMPACT

  • Reduces availability of human capital
  • Higher mortality reduces the skilled popularion and labor force
  • Weakens taxable population resulting in undeveloped roads schools etc.
  • Reduced knowledge and work experience leading to reduced productivity

ANTIRETROVIRALS

  • They increase life expectancy for people with a terminal disease
  • There are several classes of antiretroviral drugs
  • Most popular for AIDS patients
  • Very few patients in Africa can afford them
