History
-the first recorded case was in 1976
-AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus HIV
-most scientists believe it was transferred from nonhuman to human
-HIV originated in Africa
Spread
-it spreads from mother to child
-blood transfers
-can be spread by razors
-can be spread from animals
Orphans
-children's parents die of aids so they become orphans
-an increase in the orphan number because of aids is becoming a problem
-most orphans often experiences negative changes in the lives
-some orphans miss out on school enrollment because of their situation
Economic impact
-the cost of the research and treatment is expensive
-not a lot of people can work
-aids and HIV adds to food insecurity
-government income has declined
Antiretrovirals
-AIDS went from a death sentence to a chronic, but treatable disease, thanks to antiretroviral drugs
-these drugs are too expensive for people to get
-death counts have been decreased because of this drug
-some countries were able to get the drugs cheaper than they are
