HISTORY

  • Spread more in 1998-2003
  • More than 2,000 were effected before 1960
  • 1959 they came up with tests.
  • Governments had few good ideas to stop it from spreading

  • Reached epidemic levels in 1980's
  • Carried into Eastern Africa in 1970
  • Uganda was hit hard in 1970
  • 1988 was 2nd highest spreading rate

ECONOMIC IMPACT

  • Government knew there was no cure
  • People had no focused on a cure for a while
  • Had a 5 year plan to help people
  • People were slow to respond to the disease.

ANTIRETOVIRALS

  • Very costly to get treatment
  • 1.1 million people in sub-Saharan Africa received antiretroviral therapy, reaching a total of 6.2 million people across the region in 2011
  • Progress to stop spread has increased
  • In 2011 56% of people were capable for treatment.
