Air Pollution

No Description

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Air Pollution

Grace Lofstrom and Mike Leiter

Background

Facts

  • It is visible and invisible.
  • It causes global warming.
  • It is anything in the air that hurts the Earth.

Pollutants

  • Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
  • Methane (CH4)
  • Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)
  • Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)
  • Nitrogen Oxides (NOx)
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

Awareness

  • This issue is going to greatly affect the earth in the next century.
  • It could melt the ice caps, and many costal cities could be flooded.

Causes

Energy Plants

  • Energy plants are 40% of America's pollution
  • 2.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide per year

Transportation

  • Cars, trains, and airplanes are all major causes of air pollution
  • They create NOx and VOCs
  • NOx and VOCs react to make ozone

Industry

  • Burning fuel for energy
  • Industrial leaks
  • Using fuels in products

Consequences

Negative

  • Climate Change
  • Human and other Organisms Health Issues
  • Economy Impact

Climate Change

  • Cause: Carbon Dioxide
  • Effect: the atmosphere traps more heat than natural.

Greenhouse Gases

  • Gases trap more heat than natural
  • This is slowly warming the earth.
  • Changes like this have happened in the past, but not at this quick rate.

Acid Rain

  • Caused by NOx in the atmosphere
  • Terrible for forests and for monuments/buildings

Future Consequences

  • Melting ice caps
  • Change in temperature
  • Ecosystems will change
  • These factors may lead to economic conflict

Solutions

Electric Transportation

  • Using electric cars, and not cars powered by gas will reduce the amount of greenhouse gases from them

Clean Energy

  • We can use solar and other types of clean energy
  • This will lower the amount of carbon dioxide energy plants make

Current Fixes

  • We have wind fields
  • There are organizations like the EPA trying to fix it

Future Methods

  • The NRDC has proposed a plan that would cut back on carbon emissions from plants
  • It would also create jobs and the benefits outweigh the costs monetarily too
