What is an airspeed indicator?

an instrument that measures and displays the speed of an aircraft

HOW DOES AN ASI WORK?

airspeed terminology

  • GS = Ground Speed
  • WS = Wind Speed
  • CAS = Calibrated Airspedd
  • EAS = Equivalent Airspeed

GROUND SPEED

Ground speed is the speed of the aircraft relative to the ground rather than through the air, which can itself be moving relative to the ground.

WIND SPEED

Wind speed, or wind velocity, is a fundamental atmospheric rate. Wind speed is caused by air moving from high pressure to low pressure.

CALIBRATED AIRSPEED

Calibrated airspeed (CAS) is indicated airspeed corrected for instrument errors, position error and installation errors.

EQUIVALENT AIRSPEED

Equivalent airspeed (EAS) is defined as the speed at sea level that would produce the same incompressible dynamic pressure as the true airspeed at the altitude at which the vehicle is flying.
