ALABAMA SLAVE CODES

FIRST CODE

• Slave accused of a series crime cannot be denied a trail with a jury
• Reason: equality for the justice system

SECOND CODE

• Anyone who killed a slave will be punished the same as if they killed a white man unless the slave is in a rebellion
• Punishment: Same punishment as if the killed a white man
• Reason: So people don't kill another persons slaves

THIRD CODE

• Slaves cannot testify against a white man but can against another slave
• Reason: So owner can not get in trouble for what he does to the slave

FOURTH CODE

• Slaves cannot leave property without permission from owner
• Punishment: No more than 20 lashes
• Reason: So slaves can't escape
