ALAMO THE MISSION

  • It was originally built to be the church for the Mission San Antonio de Valero, which was founded in 1718.
  • The church was built by Spanish Franciscan friars in order to convert the local Indians to Christianity.
  • It was firt of the five spanish missions in the San Antonio area
  • The Alamo chapel was constructed of blocks of limestone. It is approximately 30 feet tall and 60 feet wide.

BATTLE OF THE ALAMO

  • By 1800, the Missionaries were forced to leave because their land was used for military purposes.
  • on March 6, 1836, the Mexicans attacked about 200 defenders in less than two hours
  • There were about 2000 thousand Mexican troops strong
  • Texan forces were never more than 200 strong.
  • a victory by Sam Houston at San Jacinto forced Santa Anna to surrender.

HISTORY

  • Eventually the mission was officially renamed The Alamo.
  • Alamo is the Spanish word for cottonwood.
  • Texas wanted freedom from mexico so they went to war
  • the first residents of San Antonio de Valero were members of Indian tribes
  • Some popular fighters for Texas were David Crockett, James Bowie, and Antonio lopez

  • They had to fix the first century roof

WHY IS IT A TOIRIST ATRRACTION

  • Because of all the history
  • It has become the most visited site in all of texas
  • The first stone of the Alamo was laid in 1744.

FACTS ABOUT THE ALAMO

  • Mission San Antonio de Valero" has not always been at this location.
  • The letters above the door have M.A.R." which stand for "Maria Angelorum Regina"
  • The bodies of the Mexican soldiers were buried at the old Campo Santo near milam park
