History of Albania

By: Lyric Singer

Albanian History

  • Albania was part of the Roman provinces of Dalmatia, Macedonia.
  • After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in Europe, Albania declared independence in 1912. It was recognized as its own country the following year. (1913)

Albania in WWI and WWII

  • The Great Powers had multiple issues with Albania's independence, and appointed a German prince to rule Albania.
  • Months after he began ruling, WWI started and he returned back to Germany due to lack of preparation.
  • Countries such as France, Italy, Serbia, etc invaded and occupied Albania.
  • On the verge of losing WWII, Germany withdrew from Albania.
  • Albanian resistance was fiercely active against Italy and Germany.
  • The resistance led to the formation of the Albanian Communist Party.

Albania's Past Government (1941-1944)

  • In 1944, Albania formed a communist government under Enver Hoxha.
  • Albania was led by Italian governors after being militarily occupied by Italy until 1943.

Enver Hoxah

  • He believed in absolute power of the state.
  • When he died in 1985, Albanians feared that they would be arrested if they didn't believe in absolute power.
  • Hoxha was an absolute ruler because he had complete control of Albania.

Current Day Albania

  • Today, Albania has a parliamentary representative democratic republic, where the Prime Minister is head of the government.
  • The president of Albania is elected to a five year term.
  • Bujar Nishani was elected on June 11th, 2012, and will remain the president until 2017.

Edi Rama

  • Rama is Albania's Prime Minister. He has been since 2013.
  • Rama has also been the leader of the Socialist Party of Albania since 2005.
  • He is head of the government, because he is the prime minister.
  • I think Rama is an Enlightened Thinker because he shares his ruling with the president (Nishani)
