LOCATED IN SAN FRANCISCO BAY

THIS ISLAND FEDERAL PRISON IS ALSO KNOWN AS "THE ROCK".

BUILT IN 1930

MOST OF ITS BUILDINGS STILL STAND TODAY.

Three men escaped together, meet the mastermind behind the plan.
His name was
Frank Lee Norris.

BEHIND THE GREAT ESCAPE

  • Frank Lee Norris had superior intelligence with an I.Q. of 133.
  • Lee used real human hair on the dummies left behind for the night prisoner count.
  • Norris and the Anglin brothers secretly dug holes everyday in the walls of their cells.
  • They glued 50 raincoats together to make a raft to escape the island prison.
  • It happened at night.

WHAT HAPPEN TO THE OTHERS THAT TRIED TO ESCAPE?

  • SHOT
  • Some Surrendered.

  • Some suffered from frostbite.

HOW DID THE WATER KILL?

  • Currents would carry prisoners to sea.
  • 50 degree water temperature was brutal to the unprotected prisoner.

IT WAS CLOSED ON MARCH 21, 1963 BECAUSE OF THE HUGE COST OF OPERATING.
