What happens if a woman drinks during pregnancy?

alcohol

  • travels through bloodstream and into fetus
  • fetus BAC is higher because it is smaller
  •  alcohol breaks down much more slowly
  • lead to FAS, miscarriage, premature or stillbirth
  • lasts for the baby's entire life

  • baby's liver is too small to break down alcohol
  • can damage a growing baby’s brain, organs and body
  •  prohibits the passing of oxygen to  brain and other organs

FAS

  • weigh less and be shorter than normal
  • have deformed features (face, joints, limbs)
  • learning disabilities (speech and language delay) 
  • born addicted to alcohol
  • poor coordination

Missconceptions

  • you can have a small glass
  • drinking wine is better than hard alcohol
  • alcohol is better than doing drugs
  • drinking later in the pregnancy is less harmful
  • it's ok to drink while breastfeeding
