EARLY LIFE

  • Born on July 20, 356 B.C.
  • Born in Macedonia
  • Parents were King Philip II and Queen Olympia
  • Tutored by Leonidas, Lysimachus, and Aristotle
  • Completed education in 340 B.C.

EARLY MILITARY CAREER

  • First became a soldier and joined an expedition led by his father
  • Took control of the Companion Cavalry in 338
  • Philip II took control of most of Greece (except for Sparta)
  • Philip II then kicked out Alexander and Olympia
  • He then married Cleopatra Eurydice and had a daughter

RISE TO POWER

  • Philip II was murdered at his daughter's wedding in 336
  • Alexander gained support from the army
  • He used the army to fight others who claimed the throne
  • Olympia murdered Philip's daughter and Cleopatra
  • Alexander took control within a year

CONQUESTS

  • First secured the northern borders
  • Massacred the people of Thebes to prevent a revolt
  • Greek city states pledged allegiance in fear
  • Marched on Persia in 334
  • Was greatly outnumbered by the Persians

CONQUESTS

  • Conquered all of Persia in 333
  • He then marched on Egypt
  • First conquered Gaza
  • After Gaza fell, all of Egypt surrendered
  • He then conquered lands in modern day Iran

DEATH

  • His troops refused to march into India
  • He planned to conquer Roma and Carthage
  • Died of Malaria in Babylon in 323 B.C
  • After his death, his empire collapsed
