MACEDONIA

  • Located just north of Greece
  • Has a rough terrain and cold climate
  • This country had true and fearless kings
  • Unfortunately, they had no bright philosophers, writers, or sculptors
  • They are mainly mountain villagers
Thought of themselves as Greeks

PHILLIP II

  • Ruled from 359 B.C. - 336 B.C.
  • Was 23 years old when he became the king
  • Phillip was a very bright general, but a greedy politician
  • Helped to defeat Greece in battle of Chaeronea
  • Used phalanx (soldier to soldier) and fast Calvary to crush opponents

ALEXANDER THE GREAT

  • Alexander was the ruler from 336 B.C.- 323 B.C. (13 years)
  • He ruled Persia, Macedonia, Egypt, Indus Valley, Armenia, and many other areas
  • He went to Egypt and was crowned as Pharoah
  • He had 43,000 infantry and 5,500 Cavalry.
  • He took over after his father at age 20.

DARIUS III

pERSIAN KING WHO FLED FROM THE BATTLE OF ANATOLIA TO GIVE ALEXANDER CONTOL

ALEXANDER'S INVASIONS AND CONQUERS

  • He conquers Persia first.
  • Alexander decides to invade Persia because it was his fathers wishes
  • Fulfilled plans, giving control over Anatolia
  • Alexander burnt down Persepolis in revenge of the burning of Athens

  • He had a very big cultural impact
  • A new culture emerged from Alexander

WHO TAKES OVER EMPIRES

  • Antigonus- one of Alexander's generals. He took over Macedonia
  • Ptolemy- became Pharaoh of Egypt. Established a dynasty.
  • Seleucid- took over most of the Persian empire.
  • They all ruled with complete power over the people

MACEDONIAN'S INFLUENCE ON WESTERN CIVILIZATION

  • The phalanx military tactics used
  • They brought a new culture that is still present today
  • This new culture is Greek, Egyptian, Persian, and Indian
