PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Alfred Wegener

continental drift

Alfred Wegener believed that over millions of years, the continents had separated into what they are now but once they were all a whole piece. Wegener dedicated his whole life to proving this theory and ultimately died on one of his missions.

Wegener's evidence

  • Shape/fit of the continents
  • Fossil evidence
  • evidence of landforms
  • climate
  • different latitude and longitude

1. shape/fit of the continents

  • ALFRED WEGENER BELIEVED THAT THE COASTLINES OF South America and Africa fit together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

2. FOSSIL EVIDENCE

  • traces of fossil evidence have been found on continents where otherwise it would be impossible for the animals to make it to the continents on their own.

3. EVIDENCE OF LANDFORMS

  • certain landforms were found on the coastlines of continents that match up perfectly to each other.

4. climate

  • in certain places in the world, abnormal climates that wouldn't necessarily be found in that location correspond with surrounding places.

different latitude and longitude

  • while on an expedition to Greenland, Wegener found that previous latitude and longitude measurements didn't line up with the current location.

many experts didn't agree with this theory

they thought of Wegener as just a "meteorologist"
