Title Slide: This Haiku deck features key terms featured in the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Algebra I End of Course (EOC) Exam.

Continuous

number values that Keep Going
Some examples of continuous data include height and weight (to a certain range). This type of data is presented as a smooth, connected line on a graph.

discrete

unconnected values
Examples of discrete values include number of students (e.g. you don't have 11.5 students), number of tickets purchased, number of laptops. This data is displayed with a dashed line on a graph.

increasing

going up from left to right
An increasing linear graph has a positive slope.

decreasing

going down from left to right
An decreasing linear graph has a negative slope.

variable

unknown number shown as a letter
Having an unknown number is the basis of algebra. This variable is commonly denoted by the letter x, but can use additional letters to indicate different unknown values.

independent variable

controls the outcome (Input)
Located on the x-axis on the coordinate plane. These values can be changed or controlled in an equation. They provide the "input" which is modified by the equation to change the "output." A common independent variables is time.

dependent variable

the outcome (output)
Located on the y-axis on the coordinate plane. These values (output) are the result from the independent variables (input). In this example, as time passes (independent), the butterfly eventually comes out of its cocoon (dependent).

coordinate plane

x and y number line
The horizontal line is called the x-axis, while the vertical line is the y-axis. The lines cross at their zero points known as the origin. The coordinate plane is cut into 4 quadrants.

coordinate

a point
Pair of numbers used to locate a point on a coordinate plane. It is written in the form (x, y).

domain

all the x-values (Left & Right Border)
The set of values of the independent variable (x) for which a function or relation is exists. From the image standpoint, the domain would be similar to cropping a picture by adjusting its left and right borders. The domain values are shown from least to greatest.

Range

all the y-values (bottom & top Border)
The set of values of the dependent variable (y) for which a function or relation is exists. From the image standpoint, the range would be similar to cropping a picture by adjusting its bottom and top borders. The range values are shown from least to greatest.
