ALGONQUIANS

WHERE THEY LIVED

  • Subarctic of North America
  • Most Algonquians leave there homes and follow the caribou.
  • The Algonquians are farther east.
  • The subarctic is more hospitable
  • They lived by marshes and streams.

FOOD

  • They hunted moose, deer buffalo, and birds.
  • Smaller Algonquian groups are called bands and they hunt fish and gather wild plants.
  • The Algonquians gather squash, pumpkin seeds, beans, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and nuts.

CLOTHES

  • Made most clothing from elk and deer hides
  • Decorated there clothing with shells, stones, seed, ect.
  • Women wear dresses or skirts with removable sleeves
  • Wore leggings, belts, and moccasins

RELGIONS

  • The great spirt they worshipped was Kautantowwi
  • One of the legends was the great spirt created the Algonquian people
  • When there was floods they thought they did something to upset the great spirit
  • The spirit Kautantowwit was believed to live in the southeast

SHELTER

  • They lived in log houses and wigwams
  • Lived in villages with 800 or 900 Indians
  • Used animal hides for there roofs
  • There was a fire in the middle of a wigwam
  • Could fit 10 to 11 families in 1 large wigwam

FAMILY GENDER ROLES

  • The men hunted all day while the women were at home
  • Women cleaned at home and babysat there children
  • Children helped there mothers plant in the summer
  • Girls and women were expected to clean up after the men like slaves

TOOLS

  • The Algonquians used bark and wood
  • They used wood to make bow and arrows
  • Knifes and spears were made with wooden handles
  • Traded stuff for more tools

  • They would play games like football and keep away
