WALKERS LIFE

Alice Walker was born on February 4, 1944 in Eatonton, Georgia. She was the youngest of eight children and was resentful towards her father. Walker was a very outgoing and confidentas a child but had an accident giving her a blind eye. After her accident she was bullied by other kids making her self conscious and have the topic of suicide on her mind. She began to write stories and poetry as comfort from her loneliness. As she grew older she was granted 2 scholarships and graduated 1961. After graduation she continues to write and made an award winning novel “The Color Purple.”

THE COLOR PURPLE

The Color Purple is a novel that shows the struggles of an African American woman named Celie. Her life is surrounded by stereotypes forced on to women and other African Americans. She goes on to tell her life through series of letters to God.

“I’M POOR, BLACK I MAY EVEN BE UGLY, BUT DEAR GOD I’M HERE”

I think that this quote is powerful because Celie up to this point was trying to fit in trying, to be what people want her to be, but in this moment she doesn’t hide.
