MOST OF THE CONFEDERATE ARMY HAD TROUBLE OBTAINING FOOD.

  • It was difficult to supply food to so many men in so many places
  • They didn't have the food system ready in enough time to give the food to the armies.
  • They didn't have many ways to keep the food from rotting

THEY ALWAYS HAD TO COOK THIER OWN FOOD

  • Every thing was uncooked so the soldiers had to cook it
  • Small group would often gather together to cook
  • If a March was long the men would cook everything at once.

SOMETIMES THEY WOULD COOK IN GROUPS.

  • The group name was Mess.
  • They called each other mess mates.
  • Some solider prepared their meal alone.

SOME SOLDERS WEEVLIES IN THIER CRACKERS!

  • The solider called the the hardtack worm castles because of the bugs.
  • The bugs boarded holes through the crackers.
  • The crackers had bugs because the crackers were stacked outside of the tents and warehouses.

SOMETIMES THEY HAVE NICKNAMES FOR THIER FOOD.

  • They called poorly preserved meat " salt horse."
  • They called hardtack " tooth dullers" and " sheet iron crackers."
  • They called crumbled hardtack on salted pork "silly galley."
