What are the characteristics of air Masses?

  • An air mass has to be big. (1000 miles)
  • An air mass has uniform and consistent makeup. 
  • An air must be physically bound together.

Different types of air masses.

  • When an air mass is has Tropical , it means warm.
  • When an air mass has Polar , it means cold.
  • When an air mass has Maritime it means wet. 
  • When an air mass has Continental it means dry.
  • Air masses are described using two of these characteristics.

air fronts

  • There are different types of air fronts.
  • There is a cold front.
  • There is a warm front.
  • There is a stationary front.
  • There is an occluded front.

A cold front is when cold air moves in to take the place of warm air. It moves Southwest to Southeast.

Warm fronts are when warm air moves in to take the place of cold air. They move Southwest to Northeast.

A stationary front is when the fight between a warm front and a cold front isn"t going anywhere.

An occluded front is when the rear end of a cold front meets the front of a warm front.
