September 3, 1939

  • This was the day that Gerda’s hometown, Bielitz, Poland, got invaded by the Nazis. This was the beginning of many tragic events to come

October 15-19, 1939

  • Arthur, Gerda’s younger brother was forced in a Nazi transport. All of the other young men in the town were also forced to leave in the Nazie transport as well. This is the last time Gerda ever sees her brother.

December 20, 1939- March 31, 1940

  • The Weissmanns family was forced to live in the basement of their home.

The year 1942

  • The rest of Gerda’s family was forced in a Jewish ghetto in Bielitz

May- June 1942

  • Gerda was forced to register for work, Bielitz was then a “Jew Free” zone. During this time period Gerda was separated from her parents.

April- December 1940

  • The jewish population drops drastically from 8,000 down to 300

January- September 1941

  • Gerda meets Abek Feigenblatt (she only sees him as a friend) in a all boys camp. Abek shortly falls in love with Gerda.

August 1943

  • All girls were divided into random groups in their current camp and were sent to Märzdorf (another camp). Around this time Abek transferred to a men's camp next to Märzdorf so he can be near Greda

May 9- November 1994

  • Gurda is transferred to Grünberg

January 1945

  • Germany is being invaded by the Allies

March- April 1945

  • 401 people (including Gerda) arrive at Helmbrechts barracks

April 13 1945

  • 301 people (including Gerda) leave Helmbrechts to travel to Czechoslovakia

May 1945

  • The war is starting to come to an end. Gerda gets involved in frightening situations and has to hide in a factory with a few others for survival. This is located in Volary, Czechoslovakia

May 9- June 27, 1945

  • Kurt Klein (Gerda’s future husband) meets Gerda at a recovery hospital. Kurt cares and attends to Gerda. Gurda is only 68 pounds when they met.

June- July 1945

  • Gerda is reunited with one of her uncles in Turkey. This bring her much joy.

September 1946

  • Kurt and Gerda move to Buffalo, New York where they got married and started their new lives.
