MEANING

  • Poets childhood
  • Could not relate to others
  • His passions were different
  • He was a social outcast
  • Depression made him see negativity around him
  • He is trying to convey a sense emptiness in his life

STRUCTURE

  • One stanza
  • Double rhyme structure AB
  • - represents enjambment
  • This one stanza represents how long his misery was,by making the reader out of breath.
  • Most lines have 8 syllables and in the end 7 syllables

IMAGERY

  • "The sun that round me rolld" represents how he was surounded by happiness he could not obtain (display's envy)
  • "Of a demon in my view" represents his depression obscuring his way of life

LITERARY TECHNIQUES

  • The poem uses Anaphora to emphasize importance of certain sentences
  • Rhyming doubles

EFFECT

  • "In its autumn tint of gold" helps the reader picture how bright he felt life was without him
  • "I have not seen as other saw" and"I have not been as other were" have a similar structure to emphasizes the idea of how different he felt
  • The theme is very dark and depressing
