Declaration of Independence
On March 2, 1836, Texas formally declared its independence from Mexico.

E:
Empresario
An empresario was a person who had been granted the right to settle on land in exchange for recruiting and taking responsibility for new settlers. The word is Spanish for entrepreneur.

Freedman's Bureau
Freedman' Bureau was established in 1865 by Congress to help former black slaves and poor whites in the South in the aftermath of the U.S. Civil War

Goodnight-loving Trail
Was a trail used in the cattle drives of the late 1860s for the large-scale movement of Texas Longhorns. It is named after cattlemen Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving.

Houston
Houston is the largest city in Texas and was named after Sam Houston.

I:
Ironclad Oath
The Ironclad Oath was an oath promoted by Radical Republicans and opposed by President Abraham Lincoln. By requiring officials and voters to swear they had never supported the Confederacy, etc.It enabled a Republican coalition to come to power in ten Southern states during Reconstruction, and was the source of anger on the part of local civic leaders who were prevented from voting or holding office

Juneteenth
A festival held annually on the nineteenth of June by African Americans (especially in the southern states), to commemorate emancipation from slavery in Texas on that day in 1865.

A member of an American Indian people formerly living in Wisconsin, and now in Kansas, Oklahoma, and north central Mexico.

Law of April 6, 1830
The Law of April 6, 1830 was passed in Mexico to counter concerns that Mexican Texas, part of the border state of Coahuila y Texas, was in danger of being annexed by the United States.

mountains, carrying water from the reddish stream that meandered along the clay soil.

Quanah Parker was Comanche/English-American from the Comanche band Quahadi, strictly related also to the Nokoni band, his mother's people, and emerged as a dominant figure, particularly after the Comanches' final defeat.

Reconstruction generally refers to the period in United States history immediately following the Civil War in which the federal government set the conditions that would allow the rebellious Southern states back into the Union.

The XIT Ranch was a cattle ranch in the Texas Panhandle which operated from 1885 to 1912.

Ysleta is a community in El Paso, Texas. Ysleta was settled between October 9 and October 12, 1680, when Spanish conquistadors, Franciscan clerics and Tigua Indians took refuge along the southern bank of the Rio Grande.

Z:
Zachary Taylor was the 12th President of the United States, serving from March 1849 until his death in July 1850. Before his presidency, Taylor was a career officer in the United States Army, rising to the rank of major general.
