How will the shrinking Amazon effect the environment in the future?

AMAZON FACTS

  • Located mostly in Brazil and in some smaller South American countries.
  • Largest tropical rainforest in the world... Around 1.4 billion acres.
  • Home to around 2.5 million bug species and over 4000 plants species.
  • If deforestation continues, the Amazon rainforest could be gone in the next 40 years.
  • Home to 10% of the known species in the world

Deforestation
- About 7,700 sq miles of the forest is cut down each year.
- Used for timber and to make way for highways, houses, pastures for cattle, etc.
- About 190,000 sq miles of has been cut down since 1990.

FUTURE CLIMATE CHANGE

  • Effects not just surrounding area, but the entire world.
  • Carbon emissions rose 50% due to deforestation.
  • Open spaces from deforestaion release less moisture causing less rain.
  • Erratic weather like intense rainfall, flooding, drought, rising temp.
  • More water shortages.

LOSS OF HABITATS

  • Whole species become endangered from losing their home.
  • Alterations from highways being built neglet the animals living there.
  • Deforestation near rivers causes fish species to go all wack. (Idk why)
  • Plants, animals, and bugs become endangered everyday from deforestation.

Making a change

In 2004, Brazil made a goal of cutting deforestation by 80% by year 2020 and is currently making a huge improvement on the rainforest.
