Location
The Amazon rainforest is located in South America and covers 2.1 million square miles of land. Brazil has 60%, Peru has 13%, and Columbia has 10% while other countries have very small parts of the rainforest within their borders.

Climate and vegetation
The tropical rainforest is a biome with a constant temperature and a high rainfall. The level of humidity and density of the vegetation give the ecosystem a unique water and nutrient cycle. Rainforests around the world are threatened by human expansion.

  • 20% of the world’s bird species live in the Amazon rainforest.
  • 10% of the world’s known species live in the Amazon rainforest.
  • In both 2005 and 2010 the Amazon rainforest suffered severe droughts.
