Amendment 11

  • citizens cannot sue state in Federal Court without state's consent
  • 1 state v 1 state in court
  • passed 3.4.1794
  • ratified in NC 2.7.1795
  • Took 340 days

Amendment 12

  • 1 ballot elected the President
  • Electors cast two votes on separate ballots
  • went from 1 to 2 ballots

  • It outlaws Slavery

  • Ratified 12.6.1865

Amendment 14

  • All former slaves are citizens; all citizens have equal protection under law
  • Passed on 6.13.1866
  • Ratified 7.9.1868

  • all former (male) slaves can vote
  • passed on 2.26.1869
  • you cannot keep people from voting based upon their race

  • congress can tax income
  • overturned an 1895 supreme court decision that declared income taxes " unconstitutional

  • Making, selling or transporting alcohol is illegal ; repealed by the 21st amendment in 1933
  • when you are 18 you are legal you can vote you are an adult you have responsibilities

  • extended women suffrage
  • suffrage( right to vote) to all women
  • you cannot keep people from voting based upon their gender

Amendment 20

  • changes when a president begins his/her new term from march 4th to january 20th in order to reduce the " Lame Duck"

  • repealed the 18th prohibition
  • the states decide the drinking age
  • 21 until 1970s after 1983 age rose from 18 to 21
