The "Clovis" People

  • Estab. one of the 1st civilizations in the Americas
  • Among the1st people to make tools and to eat other animals
  • Migrated from Siberia across the bering land bridge into Alaska. Then moved southward to warmer regions (including New Mexico)

Diversity!

  • Much more diverse and scattered than originally believed
  • Evidence suggests that not all the early migrants came across the Bering Strait

The Archaic Period

  • Continued to support themselves by hunting and gathering
  • Used stone tools and hunted w/spears
  • Developed new tools such as nets and hooks for fishing, traps for smaller animals, and baskets for gathering berries, nuts and seeds.

  • Later groups began to farm (Most important crop was CORN, but they grew other crops such as beans and squash)
