Many people disagreed with Jefferson's decision to buy it.
Jefferson sent out Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the land.

Lewis was 25 years old.
He fought in the Whiskey Rebellion for the military.
He stayed in the military since the rebellion.

He was an amateur scientist.

Its economy relied on slave trade.
Many slaves never even saw plantations.
They instead worked in towns and drove people around.
