AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY

The American Cancer Society represents all types of cancers, such as breast, prostate, lung, skin, and colon cancer.

The organization was founded in 1913 by 10 doctors and 5 laypeople in New York City.

The organization was founded to raise awareness about cancer in order to make progress against the disease. Their aim was to educate the public through informational articles and magazines.

THE PURPOSE:

  • Helping you stay well- take steps to prevent cancer or find it at its earliest, most treatable stage.
  • Helping you get well- help you through every step of your cancer experience

THE PURPOSE:

  • Finding cures- fund and conduct research that helps us better understand, prevent, and find cures for cancer.
  • Fighting back- work with lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and rally communities worldwide to join the fight.

THE PURPOSE:

  • Access to care- working everyday to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Helping millions of underinsured and uninsured Americans gain access to quality health care.

How is American Cancer Society Funded?
The organization is funded through donations and fundraising events. It also has many corporate partners who actively support the mission. People are seeing their money at work through cancer breakthroughs and educational programs offered by the ACS.

CANCER

  • General name for a group of more than 100 diseases.
  • All cancers start because abnormal cells grow out of control and sometimes invade other tissues of the body.
  • All cancers grow at different rates and respond to different treatments.
  • The signs and symptoms will depend on where the cancer is, how big it is, and how much it affects the organs or tissues.

RISK FACTORS:

  • Tobacco use
  • Diet
  • Weight
  • Alcohol use
  • Sun exposure

TREATMENT?

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • There are more methods, but it all depends on the type of cancer.

NUMBERS AND PERCENTAGES:

  • Over one and half million new cancer cases are diagnosed each year.
  • About half of all men and one-third of all women in the United States will develop cancer during their lifetimes.
  • About 5% to 10% of all cancers are linked to genes that are inherited from parents.
  • Today, nearly 14.5 million people alive in the United States have had some type of cancer.
