aBOUT aRMY CAMPS

  • Army camps  were like a big city bustling white canvas.
  • Camps were considered temporary throughout the year until winter months.
  • Soldiers would also construct wooden huts that would fit several men.
  • The logs were taken from a nearby source.
  • Logs were placed underneath stones in a rectangle so the huts stay still.

names of some camps

  • Camp Morton in Indianapolis was a civil war training camp.
  • Andersonville or camp Sumter was built in 1864 and held a lot of prisoners.
  • Cumberland in Virginia was an union army camp.
  • Confederate winter quarters at Centreville, Virginia.
  • Chase camp was a military prison and training camp.

Activities in the camps

  • Some of the people did camp drills.
  • They also cooked for other soldiers.
  • People slept.[We know people took night shifts]
  • They practiced firing weapons.
  • They also practiced if they got ambushed.

  • Did you know Camp Sumter held over about 80,000 prisoners?
  • Did you know instead of dying regularly people in camps died of diseases? 
  • Approximately 625,000 men died in the civil war.
  •  One-third of the Union Army were immigrants. 
  • One-tenth of the Union Army was African American.
