AMERICAN DREAM

BY: MIKAYLA ROOF&PERNILLE MUNKVOLD

Sam Walton was an American businessman and entrepreneur. He was born in 1918 in Oklahoma, but moved to Missouri early in his life. He grew up during the Great Depression, which forced him to work hard from the beginning. After graduating from the University of Missouri, he got a job at J.C. Penney. In 1943 he joined the military where he served as an Army Captain. He got married to his wife Helen the same years, and they had four children together.

After WW2 he bought his first Ben Franklin store in Arkansas, with the help of his father-in-law. Over the next two decades he owned 15 other Ben Franklin stores with his brother, James, but eventually he had had enough. Frustration over the management and the decision to ignore Walton's ideas caused him to strike out of his own. He opened his first Wal-Mart store in 1962 in Arkansas.

Over the years, the company went better than Sam had even expected, even though his competitors never believed in his idea. In 1976, the company had a share value of $176 million. He continued to work hard in the company until he turned 70, when he stepped down as the CEO. He died 4 years later, but remained active in the company upon his death.

""'If we work together, we'll lower the cost of living for everyone... we'll give the world an opportunity to see what it's like to save and have a better life.'
