The American Dream in 2016 is revolved around careerism; or having the perfect career.

"Today's children will display less patriotism, a poorer work ethic, and less civic responsibility when they come of age"(Kadlec 2). This quote connects to our "ism" today because it shows how children have a poor work ethic and that can cause a problem with their career as they grow and mature.

"There isn't a country on the map whose average wage earner could afford all of these expenses together" (Soergel 1). This shows careerism because not many people can afford American Dream expenses.

CONNECTION AND EXPLANATION

• The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
• The Great Gatsby fits my definition of our "ism" today because it shows how a career can change lives and the American Dream. It shows you can come from not much to a whole lot.
• Also Gatsby shows that all he wants to is give Daisy the life she deserves.

So what?

Careerism is connected to the world because it is needed to have the "perfect" American Dream.
